More Information

The Tree Inventory Program utilizes citizen science volunteers to identify, measure and catalog the trees in D.C.’s parks. Volunteers measure the size of the tree, determine the health and identify the species of each tree they inventory. In conjunction with local land managers, the District Department of Parks and Recreation, the Urban Forestry Administration and The National Park Service we have inventoried thousands of trees across the district.

Washington, D.C. does not currently have a comprehensive inventory of all the trees in our park lands. We need this information in order to properly manage for pest and diseases, to plan for the future and inform our planting practices.

Events occur from late April to early August and September to November. They generally last about three hours on evenings or Saturday mornings. No prior experience is required. We recommend attending Trees 101 or Trees 201 to help with species identification skills.

Participants will receive a short, hands-on training on site. After learning the tools and techniques participants will split into groups and begin measuring trees. We will be documenting tree species, height, diameter of the trunk, width of the crown, overall health and more.

We conduct the inventories in all weather conditions, those participating should be prepared to be outside for 3 hours, wear appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes for walking short distances. Participants are welcome to bring water and a snack.
