Measure, Map, and Collaboratively Manage Urban Forests
In a specific area
TreeKIT helps city dwellers measure, map, and collaboratively manage street trees. From 2010 to 2015, TreeKIT developed a simple method of accurately and precisely mapping the locations of curbside trees using analogue measuring tools. TreeKIT worked with experts in the open tech community to create software that transforms field measurements into high-grade street tree maps. In 2015, the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation folded the TreeKIT tools, methods, and training materials into the TreesCount!2015, the decennial census of all street trees in the city. The initiative mapped more than 666,000 trees with the help of more than 2,000 volunteers working over the course of two summers.
