More Information
We will be holding our monthly meeting for members and guests starting at 1:15 PM in Berliner Hall of Hofstra University, California Avenue, 1st floor. Parking is in the lot on Huntington Place across the street. AOS meetings consist of observing reports and guest speakers on astronomy topics. Doors open at 1:15 PM and our featured speaker begins their talk at 3:00 PM.
For our June meeting we are thrilled to welcome as our guest speaker Dr. Jay Lockman, Emeritus Astronomer and former site director of the Greenbank Observatory, located in the heart of radio astronomy country in West Viriginia. Dr. Lockman was also the instructor for the Great Courses series on Radio Astronomy. He will talk about the early history of Radio Astronomy (Jansky, Reber and other early/groundbreaking discoveries), the history of Green Bank including the Quiet Zone, historical instruments, projects and discoveries including SgrA*, SETI, and the Green Bank Interferometer.
In addition we will be taking a moment during this meeting to recognize and honor our incredible volunteers by giving out awards for the hard work, dedication and outreach efforts to which they have contributed in 2024.
This will be a hybrid meeting via WebEx. Non-members please contact our Secretary for an invitation and log in information at AOSSecretary@aosny.org.
