More Information
The Amateur Observers Society of NY (AOSNY) and Astronomical Society of Long Island (ASLI) have combined memberships in excess of 250 people. These two well known astronomy clubs are joining forces to raise food and monetary donations for Long Island Cares-The Harry Chapin Food Bank. This is truly a monumental endeavor for a great cause as the three entities combine to raise both personal awareness and needed food to the struggling families of Long Island.
Upon entry, cars would be directed to park at a location that would not interfere with attendees’ ability to safely look through the equipment. Depending upon where the event is permitted to occur in Sunken Meadow, attendees would have a relatively short walk once they park to the Viewing Area.
On the way to the Viewing Area, attendees would pass by a Welcome Area. That areas would include boxes set up by LI Cares volunteers to collect the food donations. This walkway would also include opportunities for attendees to make monetary donations, purchase LI Cares merchandise, and raffle tickets. These raffle prizes are likely to include gift cards, telescopes, and other items that corporate or individuals are generously donating. Long Island Cares would be the beneficiary of all proceeds from the sale of merchandise and donations.
The astronomy clubs will provide 15 to 20 outreach volunteers who will bring their telescopes and other viewing equipment so that attendees will have views of the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, and other wonders of the night sky and objects of interest. Additional club members will be in attendance to provide subject matter expertise for event attendees.
