Arizona State Parks and Trails: Geology Tour at Oracle State Park

Limited space, by reservation only! Did you know that Oracle State Park was once covered by warm, shallow seas? Are you familiar with the numerous faults that uncovered rocks once buried more than 5 miles beneath the surface? The Park offers visitors the opportunity to experience the unique geology of the Santa Catalina Mountains area. First, you’ll participate in an interactive discussion of major geologic events led by park geologist Tom Buckley. Then you’ll join Tom on a 1¼ mile guided hike exploring the landforms and dynamic geology of the surrounding area. You’ll have many opportunities to ask questions and handle real rocks in the field! Our Fall 2024 tour has been enhanced with new rock samples, fossils, information and illustrations. Tom Buckley has also created a post tour packet for all participants that provides maps and a new “Geology of Featured Trails at the Park” pamphlet with photos from Ranger Michael Bain. No prior geology experience is needed. Meet at Oracle State Park’s Group Use Area Parking Lot. The program will last between 2 to 2.5-hours long.
