The October members meeting will be held October 9th at 7PM. This is a one-time departure from the monthly meetings scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month. Our guest speaker is Citizen Scientist Janet Anderson who will speak on “ARISS School Contact - Behind the Scenes”
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) aims to inspire students worldwide to pursue interests and careers in science, technology, engineering and math through amateur radio communications opportunities with the International Space Station (ISS) on-orbit crew. Citizen scientist, Karen Anderson, is our guest speaker October 9th when she will share her experience with ARISS.
In 1994, Karen Anderson and her husband, Chris, moved to Florida where Karen worked as an interior designer until she decided to become a teacher, as this would give her more time to spend with her two sons. She earned her master’s degree in Reading Education from Nova Southeastern University in 2006 with a 4.0 G.P.A. Over her 25 years of teaching, she has become certified to teach seven different subjects, including Reading, Language Arts, Journalism, and Middle School Science.
When her sons became involved in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, Karen volunteered first as a Den Mother, and later as an Assistant Scout Master. In 2010, she earned her Technician and General Class amateur radio license with her husband and sons as well as becoming Skywarn trained by the National Weather Service. Chris and Karen inspired the scouts and adult leaders in their troop to earn their amateur radio licenses. Karen’s article about the troop experience was published on the website of the American Radio Relay League (AARL), a national association for amateur radio, connecting hams around the U.S. with news, information and resources.
Talking to her husband one night about some of their goals and dreams, Karen realized that she had the perfect knowledge base to get a scheduled contact with the International Space Station for her school, and, after receiving permission from her principal, she submitted her first application. This started the year-long journey she will share at our October 9th meeting.
