Astronomy on Tap Bristol: Exoplanets’ Star Signs and Cosmic Giants

Join us at The Lansdown for an evening of astronomy, great company, and stellar conversations. This month’s lineup features two fantastic talks by Dan Valentine, University of Bristol Post-Doctoral Researcher, telling us about theStar Signs of Exoplanets and Hattie Stewart, University of Oxford Post-Doctoral Fellow, who will show us how to goHunting for Cosmic Giants!

Expect delectable drinks, a fun space‑themed quiz, and prizes that are out of this world!

The event is FREE and open to everyone! We’ll be doing tickets for seats this time, but there will also be **standing spaces available without tickets,**so come along nice and early to make sure you get a good spot.

The Star Signs of Exoplanets: Astronomy or Astrology?– Dan Valentine

Astronomers and astrologers have waged a long, bitter war over whether people think of science or star signs when they hear the word “astro”. In this talk, we’re going to bridge the divide by answering the question:are the personalities of exoplanets written in the stars? Is WASP-12b two-faced because she’s a Gemini? Is WASP-17b chaotic because she’s a Scorpio? If the TRAPPIST system is an Aquarius, then where’s all the water? Come along for a journey through the star signs of exoplanets, and discover what their cosmic personalities can tell us about their physical properties.

Hunting for Cosmic Giants – Hattie Stewart

You look up at the night sky. Thousands of stars glitter against the darkness, but your eyes can only see so much. Beyond the visible realm lies another sky: vast, ancient, and filled with radio signals travelling the cosmos. Somewhere out there, giants are hiding. Venture into the Radio Realm in this science-talk meets one-shot. New telescopes have mapped more of the radio sky than ever before, but thousands of sources crowd your map. Fortunately, you will not be travelling alone. Trained in the ancient art of pattern recognition, U-Net will guide you as you encounter galaxies, ravenous black holes and perhaps the creature you seek. Roll for perception.
