More Information

Beach Environmental Assessment, Communication & Health (BEACH) volunteers help monitor the safety of Washington State marine swimming beaches during the summer recreation season (Memorial Day–Labor Day).

Volunteers collect weekly water samples at high-use beaches to test for enterococci, an indicator bacteria used to assess potential health risks from fecal pollution. Elevated bacteria levels may indicate contamination from sources such as sewage problems, boating waste, septic systems, or animal waste.

The BEACH Program is a collaborative effort involving state agencies, local health departments, tribal nations, and volunteers. Monitoring results help protect public health by informing beach advisories and educating communities about safe swimming practices and beach stewardship.
