More Information

The monitoring of the Chequered Copper (Lucia limbaria) butterfly in Park 16/Victoria Park/Pakapakanthi on the Eastern edge of the Adelaide CBD records the occurrences of butterfly flights, eggs laid and caterpillar sightings in association with the abligate ant (Iridomyrmex rufoniger).
This amazing mutual symbiosis has raised the profile of this small butterfly which exists in remnant grassland, but it is reliant on a population of the common black ant to ensure its survival.
Monitoring by the Butterfly Conservation SA volunteers includes photographic evidence and records of sightings are uploaded to iNaturalist and to Flickr.
