More Information

Chickenology: (n.) the collaborative study of life science standards by focusing on the ancestry, traits, and behaviors of a familiar organism–the chicken
Teach genetics and engineering in grades 5–8 by taking a closer look at chickens.
GrowNextGen teacher leaders will guide you in how to implement Chickenology with your middle grades life science students based on their own classroom experience.
During this workshop for Ohio middle grade STEM teachers, you’ll…
Explore Chickenology, a 10-lesson curriculum resource with focus questions such as:
Where did chickens come from?
How can environmental conditions impact growth rate, behavior and reproduction?
How do inherited traits impact survival?
How can we predict the expression and variance of traits in poultry?
Engage deeper science learning with:
Career videos
Virtual field trips
E-learning modules
Games and simulations
Project-based engineering challenges
Try out the games, simulations, and engineering challenges yourself during the workshop.
Bring back the classroom supplies you need: prepared slides, foldscopes aka student microscopes, hygrometer/thermometer, plus materials for the games and engineering challenges. (total value of $350)
We provide breakfast and lunch, as well as .7 CEUs.
NGSS Disciplinary core ideas
LS1.B Growth and development of organisms
LS2.C Ecosystem dynamics, functioning and resilience
LS4.A Evidence of common ancestry and diversity
Chickenology is presented by GrownNextGen and funded by the Ohio Poultry Association and the Ohio Soybean Council in partnership with Educationprojects.org and OSU/4H.

  • This workshop does not include or provide supplies for hatching chicks. It is NOT for elementary teachers. Limited spots available for extension teachers. This workshop is for OHIO teachers only.

GrowNextGen connects students to real-world science and careers in modern agriculture through the generous support of the Ohio Soybean Council and Ohio soybean farmers.
