Flagstaff Festival of Science: The Day the Dragon Rose – A Fire Weather Story

The Dragon Bravo Fire exploded into public awareness in mid-July as it consumed historic structures on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. But that was only the beginning. As weather conditions deteriorated, the fire underwent explosive growth, ultimately becoming one of the largest wildfires in Arizona history. This presentation explores the extreme fire weather that fueled the blaze–and how modern meteorological science and technology are helping us detect, forecast, and combat these increasingly destructive wildfires.
