More Information

Join the Amateur Observers’ Society of New York as they help the Staff Members of the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center open the night skies for International Observe the Moon Night (IOMN). This special night is a yearly event that takes place around the world in a coordinated effort to OBSERVE OUR MOON.
Our only satellite, the moon, is a special celestial body that helps stabilize life on our planet.

The Moon has a significant influence on life on Earth, with effects ranging from the practical to the profound. Here are a few key aspects: Tides : The Moon’s gravitational pull creates ocean tides, which are crucial for many marine ecosystems. Tides help in nutrient cycling and support diverse life forms, from tiny plankton to large marine mammals. They also influence coastal habitats and can impact the reproductive cycles of various species. Stabilizing Earth’s Tilt : The Moon helps stabilize Earth’s axial tilt, which affects our planet’s climate and seasonal patterns. Without the Moon, Earth’s tilt could vary significantly, leading to extreme changes in climate over long periods. Nighttime Illumination : The Moon provides natural light at night, which has historically influenced the behavior of nocturnal animals and human activities. Many species have evolved to use moonlight for navigation, hunting, or mating. Cultural and Biological Rhythms : The Moon has influenced human culture, myths, and calendars for millennia. Its phases are also linked to various biological rhythms in nature. Some animals, like certain corals and fish, use lunar cycles for spawning and other life processes. Scientific Study : Studying the Moon has provided insights into Earth’s history, including information about the early solar system. The Apollo missions, for example, revealed much about the Moon’s formation and, by extension, Earth’s early history. Overall, the Moon’s presence plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance of many natural processes on Earth.
