Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Welcome to the Sonoran Desert

oin Ranger Kevin for a scenic hike and learn more about the amazing Sonoran Desert. This introduction to the Sonoran Desert is perfect for residents and visitors alike. Join Ranger Kevin for a 2-mile hike on the Spur Cross and Metate trails. Trails are rated moderate, so expect stretches of loose rock, uneven terrain and a small amount of elevation change. We’ll be talking about what makes our desert quite possibly the most biodiverse desert on Earth. We’ll also be stopping to observe various plants and animals along the way and dig into the amazing adaptations these desert dwellers have developed that allow them to thrive here. Please wear sturdy closed-toed shoes and bring plenty of water. Hats and sunscreen are also highly recommended, and you may find hiking poles useful. Restrooms are available near the trailhead. NO pets, please. MEETING LOCATION: Spur Cross trailhead (by covered picnic tables) Please note: Entry to Spur Cross Conservation Area is $3 per person. Cash only is accepted, and exact change is appreciated. If entry station is closed, please place your money in the payment box at the gate. Limit 20 participants. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered, please call the Nature Center ASAP so we may contact those on the waiting list. Registration for this program will close on 3/19.
