More Information

The Mission Garden acequia (irrigation canal) runs through the garden, mirroring an ancient canal once used by Hohokam farmers. Soon after we installed the acequia, dragonflies and damselflies returned to the garden. Come celebrate these fascinating creatures with Dragonfly Day at Mission Garden, part of the larger Dragonfly Festival! Family friendly and open to all, no prior knowledge required! Activities: At 9am, 9:45am, and 10:30am: Take a guided tour with expert Doug Danforth to discover the dragonflies thriving in the garden. You must register in advance for a tour: REGISTER Drop-in, bilingual family programming with Pima County Environmental Education, including crafts, stories, and exploration of the insects living in the acequia. View the art installation “Landing Place,” which celebrates the Santa Cruz River and the life it sustains; Mission Garden will be one of four sites for this art in September 2025. This is part of the seventh annual annual Dragonfly Festival, a celebration of dragonflies on the Santa Cruz River. About the Tours: Mission Garden paths are not paved, but are made of compacted material that is ADA compatible, relatively flat, and suitable for wheelchairs and walkers and thus our most accessible tour location.
