This project aims to observe the expansion of this octopus species in order to understand their impact (positive or negative) on shallow habitats. We need to know if this phenomenon is just in Burrows Bay or occurring on a wider scale.

A deep-sea octopus species– the smoothskin octopus (Muuscoctopus leioderma), is typically found at depths of 800-4600 feet, but recently it has been spotted in water as shallow as 30 feet in Burrows Bay near Anacortes, Washington. Octopuses are exceptionally successful predators, so having them arrive in a new habitat could potentially cause significant changes to the ecosystems.
