Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival: Beavers and Otters of Arizona – Nature’s Engineers and Playful Predators

Arizona’s rivers, streams, and wetlands are home to two fascinating semi-aquatic mammals—the North American Beaver and the North American River Otter. While they share similar habitats, these animals live very different lives. This educational talk explores how beavers and otters shape Arizona’s waterways and how to tell them apart in the wild. Participants will learn the key physical and behavioral differences between beavers and otters, including body shape, tail type, tracks, swimming style, and feeding habits. The program highlights how beavers act as ecosystem engineers by building dams that create vital wetland habitats, while otters are agile predators known for their intelligence and playful behavior. The presentation also covers where these species are found in Arizona, their role in healthy aquatic ecosystems, current conservation efforts, and tips for spotting signs of their presence along rivers and riparian areas. With photos, videos, and real-world examples, this talk offers a deeper appreciation for two of Arizona’s most charismatic water-loving mammals.
