More Information

This field trip begins in Camp Verde where we will turn off from South Oasis Road and go up Forest Service Road 136 to trailhead parking adjacent to the Copper Canyon drainage. We will bird desert scrub, pinon/juniper, and riparian habitat. Most years there is a trickle of water and a small waterfall in Copper Canyon for a portion of this trip. After birding, we will be treated to lunch at nearby Salt Mine Wine Vineyard and Winery. During lunch, Chip Norton will talk about current efforts in Camp Verde to maintain/improve summer flows in the Verde River. On this trip there will be three miles of walking on mostly level, but sometimes rough ground. Optional rock scrambling is required to view the waterfall. Restrooms are available at the trailhead parking location. Please bring water, a hat, sunscreen, and a snack. Cost: $115 Rating: 4 (4 is for viewing waterfall, you can skip this and it would be a 3) Transportation: Vans Meal: Lunch served at Salt Mine Wine Trip Guide: Lisa Grubbs Lisa was introduced to wildlife, birds and the wonders and mysteries of nature as a child at her family cabin in Colorado. Her adventures took her around the world exploring the natural world. Upon arriving in Sedona in 2010 she was amazed at the variety of birds in the area and began her mentorship with Dena Greenwood studying Arizona birds and the art of birding my ear. A graduate of the Nature Guide Academy - participating in surveys and leading field trips for Audubon as well as the former steward for the Bubbling Ponds Preserve. She is the dedicated bird guide at a leading resort and guides privately as well. Lisa has been guiding for the bird festival for ten years and enjoys birding trips with the local birding broads all over Arizona.         Part of the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival It’s the 2024 Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival! In 2024, join us as we explore the theme of migration and its impact on riparian areas in our environment. Our keynote speaker, Richard Crossley, will lead discussions, and the featured bird for the year is the common black hawk. The Free Family Nature Festival at the Verde Valley Birding & Nature Festival will be in the lagoon area on Saturday, April 27th from 9am to 3pm. There will be armchair birding and guided bird walks all across the Verde Valley from April 25th - 28th that you do need to register for.
