AirMapper: DIY Air Quality Monitoring
Monitor and understand local air quality
- Ongoing
More Information
Build and use a portable, battery-powered AirMapper to investigate air quality in your neighborhood, school, or community. The DIY device measures particulate matter (PM), carbon dioxide (CO₂), temperature, humidity, outdoor noise, and GPS location. Participants can carry or attach the AirMapper to a bicycle and collect measurements along designated routes, then explore the resulting data using EPA’s free RETIGO data visualization tool.
The activity is designed for educators, students, community members, and citizen scientists and provides hands-on experience with air-sensor technology, atmospheric science, environmental monitoring, and data analysis. EPA has also developed AirMapper and RETIGO lesson plans and classroom activities for grades 3–8.
Data Collected:
- Particulate matter: PM₁, PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀
- Carbon dioxide (CO₂)
- Temperature
- Relative humidity
- Outdoor noise
- GPS location
- Acceleration/movement data
