More Information

North Carolina is a major hotspot for Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), also called Factory Farms, with thousands operating across the state. These facilities can negatively impact human health, and air and water quality. In North Carolina, the public legally has the right to know where polluting industries are located, but a lack of public data has left communities in the dark, with limited tools to verify where these facilities operate or track their growth. “E-I-E-I-O No” addresses this problem by inviting anyone to participate in scanning aerial images from eastern North Carolina to document locations of poultry and hog factory farms. The project aims to produce a transparent, crowdsourced map of factory farms and their proximity to local communities.
