To kick off National Safe Boating Week 2024, the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation, the North Carolina chapter of the American Canoe Association, and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are hosting beginners’ kayaking safety programs across the state! Join us at Lake James State Park for this unique opportunity that will introduce you to flat-water kayaking at the Paddy’s Creek Access. Participants will learn about different kayak types, kayaking safety, and basic paddling skills taught by volunteer ACA-certified kayak instructors. A kayak, life jacket, and paddle will be provided for participants, but you can bring your own kayak or equipment if you would like. Participants must be at least 14 years old. Registration is required, and the program costs $15 plus tax per participant. Typically, this class would cost $50-$100! The North Carolina Fossil Festival celebrates the Aurora Fossil Museum and the rich fossil record of North Carolina. Join us for a family-friendly event steeped in tradition and good old-fashioned southern charm. This is a FREE festival, with special ticketed events. Activities include digging for fossils, fossil displays, silent auction, displays by partner nonprofit organizations, movie night, parade, live entertainment, food & craft vendors, Saturday night glow party, Dinosaur show, and much, much more!

Join a park ranger on May 18th at the Mount Jefferson Picnic Shelter. Our theme will be “spring flowers”. We will have live samples and participants are encouraged to spread out in the picnic area looking for inspiration. Park staff will provide paint, brushes, and canvases.
