New River Gorge NP&P Historic Preservation Project

There will be several opportunities once or twice every month from July to November (weather permitting) for volunteers to come out to the site of Kaymoor to do clearing of vegetation from the historic structures and site. It is an opportunity to help the National Park Service in preserving the history of the gorge and learn about the site’s history as well as native/non-native plant species in the park. Hiking into the site will vary in difficulty however there is opportunity for removal one day at the historic site of Thurmond at the Homer Nicely house which is relatively easily accessible.

This will ensure a healthy forest and a better educational interpretation of the town and mine’s history. As well as promoting education of invasive species, the importance of native plants, and the importance of upkeeping historic structures.

Those interested in local history, plants, plant ID, history of coal mining in WV, historic preservation, and hiking should particpate!
