More Information

Join Ranger Derik on a moderately difficult fast paced hike to watch the sunset, the moonrise, and the desert aglow. Ranger Derik leads this hike to watch the sun set behind the mountains and the stars come out on a 4.5 mile fast paced hike. We will listen for coyote and owl calls and watch for bat silhouettes against the dimly lit sky. Bring your blacklight and regular flashlight to look for other evening critters such as scorpions, kangaroo rats, stink bugs and more. The route uses Verde, Chuparosa, and North Loop Trails. The terrain ranges from even and smooth to uneven with small to medium rocks underfoot. No pets, please. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. Restrooms are available on the road leading to the trailhead and however there is no water so make sure to bring plenty with you. Also, as it gets hotter you are encouraged to keep more water in your car for after the hike. MEETING LOCATION: North loop trailhead Map of Meeting Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ySLfnirnS4utW2kD7 PLEASE NOTE: Outdoor summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events. The Maricopa County Parks website (www.maricopa.gov/parks) is the most accurate resource for verifying the program’s current status. Please check the program listing online before coming to the park. Limit 20 participants. To register, please call the McDowell Nature Center at (602) 506-2930 ext. with your name, phone number and number of people attending. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered, please call the Nature Center ASAP so we may contact those on the waiting list.
