Enjoy the physical and mental benefits of exploring the great outdoors on this special day! Join Ranger Nikki on an easy terrain 2-mile walk to search for creatures of the night including scorpions, bats, owls, coyotes, kangaroo rats and other nocturnal critters! The route is an out-and-back walk on the Service Road, which is mostly level but does have a small section of uneven ground at the farthest point one mile out. No pets, please. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring water, a flashlight and a UV blacklight for viewing scorpions. Restrooms and water are available at the Nature Center. National Take a Hike Day is celebrated each year on November 17 in recognition of the National Trails System Act of 1968. This Act designated a series of scenic, historic and recreation trails in both backcountry and urban areas in an effort to provide outdoor opportunities for the public. Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department encourages you to connect with nature on a ranger-led hike, on this day or any day, to explore and learn about our beautiful Sonoran Desert. To ensure everyone can enjoy this nationally recognized day, the regular day-use entry fee for all of Maricopa County’s regional parks will be waived on November 17.
