NC Science Trail: Moth Night

National Moth Week is a project of the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission, and is coordinated by a team of volunteers around the world whose expertise ranges from entomology and biology to art and communications. All share a desire to celebrate moths’ beauty, diversity and important role in the environment and to engage new audiences in appreciating and observing them.

As part of National Moth Week and the North Carolina Moth Week, the Cowan Museum of History and Science will hold a Moth Night event on Saturday, July 19, 2025, from 8:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at 411 S. Main Street, Kenansville, NC 28349. The following is more information about the event:

• Observation stations will be in the historical park and in the gardens with educational information, including ID charts, moth bait recipes, and Moth Bingo handouts.
• You may have fun just looking at the different types of moths, but if you want to record your findings and identify them, Museum staff will have information about signing up for ecoEXPLORE, so bring your smart phone and download the iNaturalist app. You will become a community scientist.
• The movie, Nocturnes (2024), in the schoolhouse (starts at 8:45 p.m.).
• Refreshments in the general store.
• Finger puppet and coloring activities in the main building.
• Moth sticker giveaways and prizes.
• A “moth disco” in the Parlor gallery.
