More Information

This project aims to gain independent evidence from multiple observers of the existence of a structural pattern in protein structure (the mosaic Q), where in addition of the hydrophobic core (region of the protein where hydrophobic amino acids are together), amino acids of the same chemical type (polar, acidic, basic or special) are clustered together in groups of approximately 8 amino acids. Importantly, this structural feature seems general among proteins and has not been reported yet.

The referred characteristic has been elucidated via statistical/computational analysis of >160,000 proteins 3D data. The project seeks to gain more evidence of the mosaic Q by visual inspection of multiple protein structures via the well-known and open source software Jmol. That is, adding independent visual confirmation of the pattern by independent observers to help gain proof of its existence, effectively crowdsourcing the discovery of this structural trait.
